Bird is the Word. What’s in a name? Many of the yoga poses we know and love have Sanskrit names that relate to nature—animals, plants, rock formations. Sometimes it’s easy to see the correspondence between the shape and it’s name—crane pose stands on long skinny arms, the feathered peacock throws it’s proud tail high. The association goes deeper though, the name having more to do with the inherent experience of the pose than just its shape. In this vinyasa class we’ll explore the birdlike qualities of bird poses—feathery lightness, structural integrity between torso and wings, and a piercing gaze.
Hanuman's Leap. Hanuman, the monkey god with the muscular human body, is one of the great heroes of the Hindi epic Ramayana. As son of the wind, he posses unusual strengthened is known for the story of how he saved Sita, the wife of the great god Rama, from the fangs of a demon by taking a single great step from India to Sri Lanka. For this reason, the splits are dedicated to him. In this class we’ll look at how we might approach similar challenges in the yoga practice with care, patience and devotion.
